In this workshop you will learn that no matter what age, health condition, or stage of life, everyone can benefit from the healing of yoga. This workshop will cover common senior health issues & conditions and the specific teaching tools needed to provide a safe environment for all students in the class. In the Brain Fit Yoga methodology, it incorporates the principles of yoga combined with brain healthy activities to increase memory, neuroplasticity, and overall circulation to the brain.
This program focused in four areas:
1. Breath Work
2. Gentle, Cognitive, Mindful Movements
3. Memory Movements
4. Meditation/Relaxation.

As the fastest grown population in America, there is a great need for compassionate & patient teachers to bring this healing art to the underserved. We will also cover the Business of Senior Yoga and discuss the different opportunities to work with this demographic in Health Care Facilities, Privates Settings, Community Organizations, and more.

Felicia Dhanani-Walsh (RYT 500) has been practicing yoga for the past 9 years and has studied yoga in India, Kripalu Yoga Center, and local schools here in Florida. She has focused her training in Yoga Therapy specializing in Senior Chair Yoga and Chronic Health Conditions. Like many, Felicia came to the mat for a release from Corporate America and discovered a new respect for her whole being and love for the practice. After her YTT training, not really knowing where to go from here, a door opened up to teach a Senior Chair Yoga Class. Quickly, Felicia discovered her passion for working with seniors and knew, these were her people she wanted to serve. Currently working in Assisted Living Facilities and Hospital Settings, Felicia has developed a program that allows teachers to be creative, playful and truly serve this community and their health needs.

Adopting an Ayurvedic Diet W/ Marilyn Parker

Ayurveda is Yoga's sister science. It is an ancient practice of healthy and longevity with roots in Indian. If you have a little bit of experience with Ayurveda, the food lists that you’ve seen for each dosha may overwhelm you. I'll be explaining why it isn't as complicated as it seems. Nature provides us with the foods that are the antidotes to each season. By following a seasonal diet, we can maintain our balance and well-being. Those restrictive and complicated food lists only come in to play when we are out of balance. Come learn how to adopt an Ayurvedic diet into your life.

Happy Hips Yin with Yoga Therapist Sol Weller

Happy Hips Yin with Yoga Therapist Sol Weller

The most common request in yoga class is hip openers. Since the majority of us sit for most of the day, the hip flexors are constantly being shortened and the hip rotators are constantly becoming tighter. The practice of opening the hips will leave you feeling lighter, more open, and will also assist in alleviating back pain and of course hip pain. On an energetic level, it is believed that we hold a lot of negative emotions and trauma in our hips which we are able to release when opening the hips. This opening allows space to create positive energy to improve our emotional state and our relationships.

The essence of Yin Yoga is surrender. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to experience longer holds of 5-10 minutes per posture with a focus on the hips. The holding of the postures allows the connective tissue that surrounds the joints to lengthen and increase its elasticity. The elasticity of our connective tissue diminishes with physical activity and aging, which makes Yin essential for injury prevention and joint health. Yin Yoga restores energy and calms the nervous system.

Price $25 (Early Bird $20 until Oct 15th)

Overview

The Yoga Therapy for the Mind 8 Week Course for Stress, Anxiety and Depression is an evidence based program developed by Heather Mason, founder of the Minded Institute, as a therapeutic treatment for stress, anxiety and depression. The course combines asanas (yoga postures), pranayama (breath-work), and restorative properties of mindfulness. The 8 week course is designed to teach you practices that will help you to manage and regulate your physical and mental well-being. New scientific research continues to affirm that depression, anxiety, and stress are best treated with methods that address both body and mind.

The yoga practice is specifically designed to bring balance back to your nervous system and to teach you how to regulate mood and emotions. Yoga postures will include those that are useful for energizing and those which are useful for bringing calm to your system.  By learning how to be with the variety of sensations in the body you simultaneously develop the ability to be with challenging emotions in a more grounded and gentle way. The course will visit new themes each week enabling you to explore your yoga practice through different perspectives, encouraging the exploration of mental patterns, perceptions, and habits that may be keeping you "stuck".

Weekly Themes

Weeks 1 - 2:  In the first two weeks of the course you will be taught how to regulate and understand your mood through breath and movement.  Some breath practices (pranayama) are energizing while others are more helpful for quietening your nervous system.

Weeks 3 - 5:  In weeks three, four and five, the focus is on how to understand and influence emotional health through body awareness and movement.

Weeks 6 - 8: The final three weeks build on the mental strength and resilience that has developed in the previous weeks. At this point we are ready to begin to work with the mind, engaging in practices that enable you to view and adapt your mental patterns in new and helpful ways.

Each week: Each segment of the course offers cumulative skills with each week’s theme building upon and developing the previous week’s learning. At the close of each session there is a discussion period for you to talk about your experiences during class and how to use what you learn when facing the challenges of daily living.

Homework Practice

Homework practice is vital to your positive change – this really is when the shifts start to take place. You’ll be given homework at the end of each class to practice daily along with reading material to support your learning. Homework practice is an important way of integrating yoga and mindfulness practice into your daily life.

Course Materials

The yoga course also includes:

  1. A comprehensive manual
  2. A Yoga Therapy and Mindfulness CD to support daily practice

Session Structure

Each class broadly follows the same 2 hour structure every week:

  • Yoga (asana) practice with awareness 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Breathing (pranayama) practice 15-20 minutes
  • Group Activity 15 minutes. The group activity serves to highlight the teaching related to that week. Activities come from either the mindfulness or yoga tradition.
  • Group Discussion 15 minutes. During the discussion students can ask questions related to yoga and mindfulness, share insights, listen to others or choose to be silent.
  • Explanation of daily home yoga therapy and mindfulness practice.

Teacher Support

During the course every student receives individual attention so you’ll feel safe and supported throughout. Additionally there is opportunity before and after sessions for private discussion with the course teacher.

We spend a good part of our days focused on our health, our careers, our families, and our friends. Return to your mat to focus on restoring the soul, and feel refreshed and re-energized. Join Frank de la Cruz, E-RYT 200, for a 1.5 hour-long Yin Yoga & Yoga Nidra practice. For the first part of the class, allow yourself to immerse deep into the slow, reflective practice of Yin Yoga, which delves deeply into the muscle fascia, joints and ligaments. For the final portion, allow Frank to guide you into the deep meditative practice of Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep). Think of it as a guided meditation aimed at calming the mind, and accelerating the self-healing abilities dormant within you.
